Day 9: You leave Srinagar.
Pahalgam is approximately 100 km drive from Srinagar and from there Aru is 12 km away. Pahalgam is a well-known place around Srinagar so if you decide to reach there by yourself, you can take a shared taxi or cab for Pahalgam from Srinagar. You will reach your destination in approximately 3 hours.
There are two beautiful routes to reach Pahalgam; one through Bijbehra and another through Anantnag.
The Bijbehra route is considered traveller trail where you will pass through mesmerizing rural Kashmir landscapes. There you will see plenty of apricot, walnut, and apple orchards tree along the way.
Aru is across the Lidder River from Pahalgam. You will cover the distance in nearly 30 minutes. You will find so many places to stay at Aru.
Today’s climb in long but gentle from Aru to Lidderwat. You will cover a distance of ten kilometres in nearly six hours. The trek to Lidderwat begins to ascend out of the village, chasing the paths of the Lidder River.
Go behind the wide path after the fence of agricultural department. This passage have so many bunches of fir trees and from here you will need to keep climbing. After 30 minutes, you will reach a place called Dalla, close to Gujjar huts. From here, there is no climbing, but a smooth rolling walk through broad pines.
After twenty minutes, you will see a diversion to Nandkei, which is a group of Gujjar settlements. Keep walking with the forest getting narrower. After walking for 30 minutes, you will enter to an open field. Another 30 minutes later, the route crosses 2 clear streams over a timber bridge.
The rivers are crystal clear and you can drink its water as well. From this bridge, it will take another hour to reach Lidderwat. After crossing the bridge, the trek ascend into another small bunches of pine trees.
After crossing the pine trees, you will find a gentle climb. In 30 minutes, you will pass through this place and enter bunches of firs again. After ten minutes of walk, you can see the beautiful meadows of Lidderwat. You can set up your camp anywhere at Lidderwat.
The Tarsar climb will begin behind the PDA huts – chasing the paths of the river gushing alongside. You will climb speedily into the pine woods above you. The route is simple and you will not find any problem.
It takes an additional hour and a half of climbing past pine groves and clearings before a breathtaking panorama appears in front of you. Lidderwat's confined valley widens to reveal expanses of sprawling meadows.
With snow patches hidden in their folds, the meadows and the enormous mountains blend together. There are now numerous valleys that converge rather than just one valley. Following the Bhakarwal shelters, the trail converges upward and to the left, staying to the right of the river.
Avoid going up the trail. Drop down to the river, hop over a few boulders, and then cross the river using a temporary long bridge. Continue climbing the trail as you follow the river. A large clearing of Homwas is seen after a trail bends to the left after thirty minutes.
A few welcoming Gujjar huts are available where you can pause for tea. The trail enters a small valley with the river's azure waters serving as steady company as it turns south-west.
The ascent keeps gaining altitude. After passing a very old group of Silver Birch (Bhoj) trees, the vista will open up to another breathtaking panorama an hour later. This time, two deep, lush valleys are reached from what may be broader grassland. Tall, gloomy, snow-covered cliffs cast a shadow over the scene beyond the meadows. The trail quickly ascends to the Shekwas campsites through a few Gujjar cottages.
Shekwas is a sensible and incredibly beautiful camping location for travellers travelling the Tarsar trail. The break is welcome after the tough climb.
The trail again winds across the grass for a considerable distance past Shekwas. In the meantime, the trail to Tarsar ascends into a ridge that hangs above the creek. The trail quickly ascends in a broad westerly direction towards a conical hill in front of it. A few false ridges that the trail ascends lead to several breathtaking vistas. The route finally offers a distant glimpse of Tarsar after two hours. Reaching the lake's shores provides a rush even after catching a fleeting glimpse of it. Step onto Tarsar's grassy glades after crossing the stream over pebbles. There are many level camping areas surrounding the lake, making it easy to set up tents.
Another fantastic draw is the vista on the other side of the Tarsar pass. Even just thinking about your next walk along the valley floor makes your heart race. The Shekwas meadows are accessible from this valley, as an aside. The majority of hikers proceed down from Tarsar till Shekwas, then turn left to enter the Sundarsar valley. You have cut the route by three to four hours by ascending to the pass.
Follow the shepherds' track that descends from the pass to the valley's floor. Rejoin the path that follows the stream as it flows over the grassy valley floor.
Continue on the route as you ascend the valley to your left. Observe a few Bakkarval shelters on your left after ten minutes.
The track ascends over a brief section of boulders behind the shelter to reach a knoll.
The most lush pastures you've ever seen are in a broad area of meadows with a spreading valley to your left.
To reach the meadow's edge, descend the pathways. The stream is eventually covered with well positioned boulders.
For another fifteen minutes, hop around the rocks while climbing quickly, until you reach the base of a ridge dividing the meadow from the valley above it. The trail climbs through a small valley that is littered with boulders for another fifteen minutes before reaching the top of the ridge.
The environments resemble one another almost exactly. A huge flowerbed covers the valley bottom. Another ridgetop, which serves as the Tarsar trek's exit point, is located far away.
The folds lead to alluring mountainous slopes covered with snow. After passing the brook trickling down the slope, continue up the trail. The trail briefly crosses the stream on comparable, carefully placed boulders. Ten minutes later, the trail appears to miraculously traverse a series of grassy mounds before coming to rest on the picturesque shores of Sundarsar Lake. Large, level areas are available for camping to your right and back.
To reach the opposite side of the lake from Sundarsar, go around the lake's shoreline on the right. One can climb one of the two logical passes. Each one leads to Marsar.
Over the trail lined with boulders on the left is the speedier route. Trace a trail in the direction of the pass by scaling the boulders. The approach could be challenging if there is snow on the boulders. To get a solid foothold, a trekking pole or an ice axe is quite helpful. It takes 30 minutes to reach the pass.
The pass is a wonderful grassy area with paths connecting down to lower terrain below it. Get to the lower elevations, where the terrain is smoother, and occasionally hop across the picturesque brooks that line the trails. A ridge that climbs to your left and in front of you can be seen if you stay on the trail as it curves to the left.
After five minutes, ascend to the ridge's summit for a breathtaking view of Marsar, which is about 600–700 feet below. Marsar is a hidden gem that is nearly perpetually shrouded in mists and mist. Marsar resembles Tarsar in size and appearance. Off the lake, tall cliffs are covered in snow. The lake's overflow waters flow along a magnificent, verdant valley to the left, towards Traal.
After returning to Marsar by your original route, it would take you 40 minutes to reach Sundarsar. After eating breakfast at the Sundarsar campground, you depart from Homwas.
You follow the same path today that you did when you first started the walk via Lidderwat. The terrain quickly descends while being downhill. You will go from Homwas to Lidderwat in two hours.
Getting to see all of those views that you had previously missed makes this portion of your walk so beautiful. One of these views is the Kolahoi glacier's retreat. The pine trees of Lidderwat that you had viewed on the first day of your trip will take on a completely new meaning for you.
On this last day, you will go back to Aru Valley. Climb down through the picturesque terrains, and relish the moments of your trip. After reaching Aru Valley, you will drive straight to Srinagar.
