The unquestionable beauty of Jammu & Kashmir makes the world drool over it for past centuries. There is no substitute for the replacement of the resplendent hues of the heaven that dwells in the state.
Deemed as the “crown of the state”, the deep and powerful magnificence of Kashmir is garlanded for its incomparable scenic artefacts carved in their tourist places.
The heaven is tangible and evident, it is here, right in front of your naked eyes.
The enamored snow showers and lavish green vegetation demarcates Kashmir from every other place in the terms of sumptuous blooming beauty.
The Markha trek walks in a parallel manner with a rivulet called Markha, a small tributary of the Zankskar river.
Ladakh also regarded as “the land of high passes”, comprises of the most of the parts of Markha valley trek.
Markha valley trek is flowering as the most considered treks in Ladakh, not only because of its thriving landscapes but also for radiating culture of Ladakh.
The valley has been uncharted and unexplored till 19th century when Tibetan arrangements established small hamlets near the canyons and demonstrated the world a new hotspot for trekking near Kashmir. Buddhist gompas are easily witnessed there over the decades.
The trek route found its name by the prominent Markha River which is streaming in the region. The famous mountain passes of the region are Ganda La (4900m) and Kongmaru La (4950m).
The trek commences at Leh. It is a perilous and treacherous trek as the altitude marks 11,000 ft so the trekker has to be well-built and should take proper rest for a day. The escapade is an exciting activity as Leh offers adventure in abundance. Leh is quite a prosperous town with no mayhem of network connectivity. You may find ATMs dispensing cash. Leh is also popular for cafes with the ambience worth remembering. Its religious implications and connotations with Buddhist monasteries as well as the castles are the food to our soul.
Soak in the intense and dazzling sunlight and take rest for an entire day before you prepare yourself for an exhaustive day. The localites may suggest you to watch a complete evening watching upbeat and affirmative sunset at the Shanti stupa.
The major attractions include Thiksey Gompa, Shey palace and adapt yourself with the familiarity of the Buddhism and its preachings. Initiate conversations with the local dwellers and impart knowledge with them.
Adorable military settlements behind the rocks allure tourists. The trekkers and travelers are attracted towards well designed paths walking through the picturesque sceneries. As you move forward, Magnet hill spreads its magnetism on the left and the Gurudwara pathar sahib on the right side of the passage. The convergence of the Indus, Sangam and Zanskar rivers with lush green shades flowing together leaves us in awe. The enchanting confluence of the different colors such as black, grey and purple make the mountains more beautiful than anything.
You may have to walk long from Chiling. The trek begins with sharp ascents alongside Zingchen gorge. Skui is the first camping site.
The valley is the home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. You may also spot Magpie birds on your route. The trek is smooth and surfaced spasmodically. The Markha river will delineate the pathway. Keep walking and you will come across a wooden bridge at Zanpa Yoakma. The trek may continue till Nagding without a break for an another 40 minutes. You will come across ancient paintings on your way. And one hour from the Nagding village, you may reach to Sara village. The village’s gate is decorated with skeletal remnants of wild animals.
Stay in homestay
You will commence the trek as soon as possible early in the morning. The valley is enigmatic and carries secrets for centuries. You will find ample amount of tea houses at chalak village. Keep walking for an another 2 hours.
Walk across the mani stones around the white stupas. Be cautious when you are around the stones as they are religiously sacred and pious and the local people tell stories about them being guarded with superpowers. The ranshackles of the ruined mansions can be seen at every step of your journey. The rulers were supposed to have used them as warehouses.
Reach Markha village, and plan for stay in the homestay.
The overlying silence of the beautiful villages have the stories untold and unsaid which cannot be deciphered. You will reach Umlung village which is a small region serving as the last tea house on your voyage. You will soon come across Mt. Kang Yatse (6400m). Enter the Hankar village.
Buckle up! It is an easy day as in comparison to the earlier days. After walking to 1km, there would be two roads diverging from Rupshu and Zanskar. You will reach at a stone bridge. And after walking for an another two hours, you will arrive at the meadows of Thochuntse. Camping sites and tea houses are evident and eloquent. As soon as your attention shifts on the Kang Yatse peak, you will be overwhelmed with the grandeur of the peak. Two twin lakes will embrace you at the next step of your journey. The colossal pastures can be seen at the height height.
You can sometimes even see ice showers and ardent snowfalls.
The day is going to be wistful, yearning and evocative and exhilarating as well. The last day of the trek marks the highest pass of the trek. The day is going to be filled with longings for more. After the exhaustive hikes to the Kongmaru La pass , it is the time to ace the trek at the Karakoram range mountains and exemplary array of peaks. Who would deny an glimpse of the giant K2mountains with the small streamers spreading with the wind?
The train then descends, and goes downwards, and gives you plenty of time to bid goodbye to the nearby villages along the pathway. The journey with memories never come to an end, even if it does, you may find new memories waiting for you.
The spontaneous trail faces small descents at the end and sharp steep which further reaches the chikirmo village. The better connectivity as in comparison to the other passes, the place has a different vibe. Delved in the Indus valley and Ladakh range, the regions takes you to a world that you didn’t know existed. Chokdo is the next stoppage with the plodding climb downwards and rockstrewn topography.
The absolutely grandiose and stately trip will make you nostalgic every time you will think of it.
The mountains know your name, they will call you back.
Up above the clouds you fly. Certain Indian airline including Go Air, Jet Airways and Air India endow flight services on regular basis, at least once a day and twice in Summers. Advance bookings are required to be done.
The most awaited trip to Ladakh has been a dream of all the youngsters. During the summers, grasp the chance of road trip via Manali to Leh. It usually takes 2-4 days as the weather conditions need to be favorable. Buses and bikes are preferred widely.
