Overview

Why Gomukh Tapovan Trek?

Do you remember your grandparents and your parents, taking a dip and offering prayers, sprinkling drops on you, and filling up the the containers of water whenever they visited the banks of Holy river Ganga?
You do, right?
We all do.
Do you ever wonder when and how Ganga came in subsistence, and turned out to be the centre of all the worshippings?
To the victory of river Ganga, we all are collectively involving ourselves since the time immemorial?
Ganga does not only rinse the sins away, but also develops an adamant and unbending decision in us, not to commit sin again.
Situated at a remarkable height of 14,600 ft, covering the complete distance of 46 km, this trek is one of its kind. The trek is the eventual solace and succor to the travelers who are guided by the mysticism and holiness.
Ganga is a part of our prodigy, our ethnicity, our civilization, our holy traditions. The Ganga is an integral part of our existence.
River ganga is also cited in the sacred Hindu epics such as Sutra of rig veda, Bhagavatam, Ramayana, Agni purana, Padma Purana etc. All the sacred manuscripts praise Ganga to the skies, and never forget to quote the significance in our life.
Also named as the “Vehicle of ascent” due to her reign expanding from Heaven to Earth.
Ganga is also said to be omnipresent, because of the mentions in old books, where she’s considered as the Triloka-patha-gamini, evidently present in Heaven, Earth and the Netherland.
The entire trek requires a planning of 8 days, but the trek is a discovery itself, of a place which is mythological, but the central portion of the Indian culture.
The wrath of the river Ganga is outrageous, and can make a person jolt, but even the silence has the loudest scream if you touch the gurgling water, and devote yourself to the rage of Maa Ganga.
According to a folk tale, a small boy accidentally found the snout which gave an appearance of the mouth of a cow, henceforth it was named Gomukh, the source of origination of Ganga.
The escapade is endowed with spiritual vibes, inner conscience and selfless dedication.

Historical significance-

Many people believe that the water of Ganga is a nectar to the dying, as the water stored in the vaults of the heaven is recognized as soma, an elixir to immortality & also helps the dead attain salvation.
People also religiously and devotedly travel to the banks of river ganga to offer the ashes of the kin, as the holy water meets heaven, accepted as true by Hindus.
Gangotri, one of the most vital part of Char dhams in India, is the source of derivation of Ganga, which commences with the name of Bhagirathi, which literally has been derived from the Sanskrit word Bhagirath, who was a king of Sagar dynasty, who persuaded Ganga to flow from Heavens to the Earth, for the freedom of his 60,000 uncles from the curse of Saint Kapila.
“like longing mothers give to us here on Earth the most blessed nectar that you have.”
Affixed to the mountainside, the water dribbles out of the snout, appears as the mouth of cow, known as Gomukh, or the birthplace of Ganga, where holy waters spring forth.
The pilgrimage is vividly characterized by the exclusivity and uniqueness.
Originating from the foot of the Supreme Lord Sri ManNarayana, aloofed as holywater in the Kamandalu of Lord Brahma, cleansed with matted hair of Lord Shiva, and emerging out of Sage Jahnu’s ear, Ganga is believed to be the most pious, dutiful and sanctimonious river.

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS:

  • Nandanvan & Tapovan– Situated at distance of 6 km from Gangotri, opposite to the Gangotri glacier. Shivling, Bhagirathi, Kedar Dome, Thalay Sagar and Sudarshan are the glorious views witnessed here. To call upon some renowned names, Nandanvan also acts as the base camps for Satopanth, Kharchakund, Kalindi Khal, Meru and Kedarnath treks.
  • Gangotri glacier lake– 7 Rakt Varn Glacier, 8 Chaturangi Glacier and 3 Kirti Glacier are the 18 tributaries respectively, which outline the Gangotri glacier, structuring it into an inimitable glacier lake Gangotri also has gifts of tributaries called Swachand, Miandi, Sumeru, and Ghanohim.

Itinerary

The trek is an ideal one, who will begin with the journey from the scratch to the ending.

We do not rush into the end of the story, we must read the climax, and have an attention-grabbing prologue to be interested in reading further.

Our journey resembles to an old classic book, in many ways.

It begins early in the morning where we blend together with our trekkers, and move ahead for a 240kms drive to Gangotri, to the lap of mysteries and secrets.

We all have different concepts and conclusions, we shall discuss all of them as it takes 8 hours, so that we can be comfortable in the complete expedition.

The mountains are phenomenal, and majestically beautiful are the places we come across, such as Mussorie, Dhanulti, Chamba.

We reach the realm of Uttarkashi, (land of Gods), located on the banks of river Bhagirathi, with hundreds of temples, named so because it is the Kashi of the Northern India, where ancient sages meditated during Mahabharat.

Legendary stories never go out of fashion, and the same goes with the tales of Uttarakhand.

Harshil, the staying point during Gaumukh tapovan trek, unharmed and unblemished boon, for the holy land of Uttarakhand.

The majestic beautifying cultures and beliefs enchant us, and make us feel nearer and closer to our fantasies.

Hashil, What a beauty

The sacred vibrations awaken the enlightenment and clarification within us, and make us receptive to the positivity and sanguinity.

It is very important to be accustomed to the place and its requirements.

The Gangotri temple, constructed in 18th century, by a Gorkha commander Amar Singh Thapa, is the residence of Goddess Ganga. We can rely on the aroma of the place and let the emotions sink in.

Pictures are the memories we keep forever, and Harshil is worth-remembering.

Bhagirath Shila, also seeks attention of the travel enthusiasts, because as it is said, the rock like structure entail the venturing down of Ganga for the first time, and Lord Shiva took Ganga in his knotted tresses to prevent the land from floods, as the Ganga had an outrageous flow.

Call it a day, and rest in the guest house.

Make sure that you had enough of food for the journey, as the proper appetite aids in the trek. Carry some energy bars and ORS powder packets. The trek flabbergasts us with dense pine forests decorating our ways, walking next to the river Bhagirathi, and treating our eyes with picturesque views of Sudarshan.

The small passageways give us a tour around the Gangotri national park, and heals the healing.

At around 21,000 ft from the land, Bhagirathi peaks, Manda peak, Bhrigu mountain make us feel home, and in safe hands.

What an astonishing feeling!

Squander some time, gawping at the beauty of India’s most beautiful river.

Tents are arranged, sleep at the campsite.

The next day follows a hectic schedule.

The incandescent morning, reviving and rejuvenating our souls, and preparing us for an another lovely day.

We have to walk for around 2-3 hours, and we accomplish to arrive at places planned for the day.

Mount Shivling, Birch trees, local police depos, small guest houses comfort us.

The place awe-inspiring for the first timers, and the ones who are seeking spirituality, determination & strength of mind.

Through the backwoods around the place, the day is frightening and exhilarating simultaneously. Trekking to Gomukh is comparatively simple, effortless and relaxing. Ganges origination begins here, and this, indeed, follows a sharp steep, along with glacial thick debris, but no mechanical support is required.

The territory around the Tapovan is stony and rock-strewn, and trekking ple can be kept for the safety purpose.

The major magnetism revolves around the enticement of Mt. Shivling, Mt. Meru and Mt. Bhagirathi peaks

The temptation doesn’t end, but the day does.

It is befitting to sleep early as soon as possible

No. You are not dreaming.

The views are bonafide and authentic, but once a story has begun, it comes to a legitimate ending too. And here we are.

Jotting down the nicest of the things about the trek, its theology and irresistible components.

Pack your belongings carefully. Famishing is not a great idea in the mountains, eat well and take enough of water.

Beside the river Bhagirathi, Gomukh needs sharp descends, and a walk of 6-7 hours before we reach Chirbassa, and to the campsite.

The day has arrived when our thanksgiving is due to Ganges, for keeping us secured throughout the journey, for saving us from any kind of mishaps, and inviting us to her dwelling.

The day requires a 9kms trek of about 4-5kms Towards Gangotri.

Backpacks are all set!

It is a long drive back to Dehradun and arrival time is around 5 PM. The team of Trekkers of India will provide the arrangements.

From a home to the other!
