Overview

All about the Deoban Trek.

Deoban is an unexplored trek near Chakrata which is a drive of around 88 kms from Dehradun. The trail justifies the name and is covered mostly with Deodar trees. This trek is a weekend trek where you can enjoy your weekends doing adventurous activities leaving behind the hustle and bustle of your daily routine for a couple of days. It is an easy trek with an exclusive view. While you walk on this path surrounded by these extremely tall trees, the feel of it is absolutely heavenly. The trees are said to be over 600 years old and named ‘devdaru’ which comes from a Sanskrit word meaning divine wood or timber of Gods.

On this weekend trek, when the weather is clear, you can spot upto 55 mountains including Nanda Devi from the highest trek point. This place is easily accessible from Dehradun as well as Delhi. One must keep in mind that there is no network on this trail. You might find network in some patches, that too if you’re lucky. So sort all your important calls before beginning this journey.

Itinerary

4 hours drive

3.5 kms trek

Trek starts from Lokhandi

After 30 minutes you will reach a small meadow

Take rest here

Begin trek to reach Saraswati which is your campsite for the night

On day 1, you will start your journey from Dehradun and reach Lokhandi which will be completed in approximately 4 hours. During the drive you will pass through towns of Chakrata and Sahiyya. As you reach Lokhandi, you will have lunch after which your trek begins. This trek is a short one that leads to a village named Koti Kanasar. From here a gradual ascent takes you deeper into a forest filled with Deodar and Pine trees. You will feel the adventure as you walk on the edge of the mountain on very narrow trail. The narrow trail opens up afterwards in a small meadow after 30 minutes of trekking. Stop here to take some rest and admire the view.
From this point on wards, you will witness some cold as the sun hardly reaches the ground here. During winter season, you will start to see the snow from here. Passing another ridge, which is mostly muddy and rocky, you will start descending gradually. After covering all this distance, you will finally reach a clear land surrounded by trees. The place is called Saraswati which is your campsite for the night. You can also get a view of the snow covered mountains towering over you.

NOTE: The weather here is very cold, so carry warm clothes with you.

Total trek of approximately 16 kms

6 hrs of trekking

Drive to Dehradun covering a distance of around 110 kms.

3.5 hours drive

Day 2 is the last and the most hectic day of your expedition. It is a long trek so start early in the morning by 5 am. Carry sufficient water with yourselves as there is no water source on the way. A steep ascent leading towards a forest mixed of pine and oak trees will be the beginning of your trek. On the way you will come across a couple of ‘Chhanni’ (Shepherd’s Shelter). After around 550 metres of climbing towards Vyas Point, there is a clearing from where you can enjoy the majestic view of the mountains.

The trail covers a light forest and a little village named Jadi and many more towns. Also, you can see the Shivalik range from here. The morning light falling on these mountains offers a picturesque view that will take your breath away. Gradually the trail merges with the motorable road that takes you to Vyas Point. After a few metres of steep climbing, you will finally reach Vyas Point. From here, the view surrounding you is indescribable! The 55 Himalayan mountains bathed in sunshine awaits you.

After taking in the absolute beauty of nature to your heart’s content, start heading back towards Sarswati. Eat lunch as soon as you reach Sarswati. From Sarswati descend to Koti Kanasar. Here we will arrange cabs for you that will take you back to Dehradun. You will reach Dehradun late in the evening by 8 pm.
