Itinerary

You will be greeted at the Airport by our team.
Our cars will take you to the pre-booked hotel and rooms will be allotted to you.
Take some rest to get your body acclimatized with the changed altitude and temperature dip.
You can spend the rest of your day at leisure or can go to a nearby marketplace.

The day is reserved to acclimatize keeping in mind the health conditions of trekkers who may witness Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). You will be served hot breakfast at your hotel.
You can walk to the Leh marketplace or can explore the town the rest of the day but make sure that you rest enough and sip on water on regular intervals so that you are now fully acclimatized and ready for your Medical test on the next day.

Enjoy your delicious breakfast at the hotel and get ready for the Medical test at the designated facility in Leh. Try to leave as early as possible to avoid any delay for your preliminary medical check-up. If you pass the medical prerequisites, you will get the fitness clearance, a green signal for the charming Chadar Trek.

Again, you can spend the rest of the day at leisure or can explore nearby places / marketplace. Spend overnight at the hotel and be mentally prepared for the expedition starting tomorrow.

Leh – Chilling – Bakula – Gyalpo
We start off from Leh and head out towards the start point of our trek at Gyalpo. En route, we will pass Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Magnetic Hill and the confluence of the Zanskar and Indus rivers just before Nimu.
Once past Chilling, we arrive at Bakula. You will commence 2 hour trek till Gyalpo.
We take our first baby steps on the frozen river, so be prepared for some slips and falls! Walking in gumboots too will take a while, so be patient as it’s only your first day for long trek.
We start off along the left bank, past the cascading waters of the Zanskar river and frozen waterfalls until we set up camp at Gyalpo.
Our camp site is on a piece of flat land high above, giving you a stunning view of bend of the river.

Rising early would have its perks as the sun comes out from behind the mountains and lights up the valley.
It will also help your body get used to the cold.
Aching bones, if any, will be sorted by some scrumptious breakfast as the Zanskar comes to life with the rising sun.
A relatively easy day of walking past higher waterfalls will get you to Tibb Cave, which lies at the intersection of two valleys.
An evening walk down any one of them can make for good exploration.

It’s the most eagerly awaited day, especially because en route Nyerak – the first village of Zanskar – is a stunning frozen waterfall.
While the ones you have seen so far are from high up, this one is also several feet in length which makes it one of the most picturesque sights on the trek.
Just ahead of it is Nyerak, and while we camp by the river, a short walk early next morning will take you back to civilization for the first time in almost a week.
At Nyerak, you can treat yourself to some goodies from the local shop and interact with the residents there, who are more than happy to indulge in a good conversation.

After four days of walking on ice, you will now be an expert.
So feel free to look around and soak in the surroundings.
There’s a good chance of spotting Ibex and Bharal a Blue Sheep on the high slopes, and if you’re lucky, even a snow leopard walking along the ridge.
Also look out for birds such as Lammergeirs and Choughs sailing high above the valley.
It’s the longest day of the trek through narrow gorges, which means climbing up a short distance by the bank of the river in places where a solid walking surface is unavailable.

Way back is tiring at the same time very interesting. After 5 days in this chilling region you get use to this environment. Snap shots of your favorite place, lying on the bed of ice, sharing your experience are the memories of trek.
We make our way back along the same way that we came, giving you the opportunity to soak in the sights that you probably missed. Trekkers along the way are sure to check with you on the route ahead, so be prepared to play guide and share your experiences.

Checkout 10.00 AM from Leh.

Time to Say Goodbye !! And a Farewell to all beautiful souls with unforgettable memories.

FAQ's

The winter months of January and February are considered to be the best time to go on Chadar frozen river trek. This is because around this time, the area experiences winters resulting in a temperature range of -5 to -25 degrees celsius. In addition to this, the Zanskar river is completely frozen during this time, thus resulting in a perfect trekking experience.

The Chadar trek can only be done during the months of January till February, therefore the roads to here are blocked due to heavy snowfall. The only way to reach here is through the air and Ladakh is accessible by air as well and one can easily schedule a flight to Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport.

The Chadar trek distance is 62 Km, where an average trekker walks around 10-15 Kilometers on foot. It takes around 5-6 hours of walking every day to make them reach the desired distance. Though the walk is straight featuring less elevation, the extreme negative temperature and the broken trails increase the difficulty of this trek. Work on your stamina and endurance at least a month prior to your trip.

Chadar trek temperature in the day time goes up to -10 Degrees. A sunny day can make the environment warm as well due to the reflection of the sunrays from the ice. Temperatures till -30 degrees have been witnessed by us in the nighttime. But don’t worry, it is quite warm inside the sleeping tent but the psychological feeling of cold will be there till the last moment of you being on the trek and in Leh as well.

With proper gear and sensible trekking, the Zanskar River trek Ladakh is not a very difficult trek. But what sets it apart is its unique experience. Everything about it is unique: the scenery, temperature, atmosphere, the frozen river, sledges, unusual campsites, caves, and the ever-changing Chadar. So unique that it makes for an unmissable experience. Chadar Frozen River Trek has been featured as the most unique trek in the country.

With proper training and preparation, even a beginner can opt for a Chadar trek package. Even though Chadar winter trek has been considered to be one of the challenging trekking routes, its path however is easy to coved for being straight and not inclined. Since you are required to spend nights in caves, pass through rugged snowy paths and a frozen lake, a large part of Chadar Trek thus depends on the mental as well as physical capabilities of a person. To make sure that you enjoy the trek in its best form, you can start training beforehand. A month-long extreme running, cycling, and weight training can make it easy for you even if you are a beginner.

The weather in Chadar Trek is extremely chilling. With the temperatures going negative to zero degree celsius, it adds to the difficulty of the Chadar trek. The piercing winds and sudden leg dips into the numbing water will challenge you to the core. The days are comparatively warmer than the nights as the sharp rays of the Sun flash over your heads, making the temperature rise to -5 degree celsius. The night cold is a test that can be qualified if you do not let your skin exposed to the freezing -25 degree celsius temperature outside and stay in your sleeping bags.

With the altitude up to 11,123 feet, Chadar Trek is a straight walk over the frozen Zanskar river facing the staggering extreme temperature. Due to the high altitude, the oxygen level is low, and so it is advisable that people suffering from asthma or any other breathing problem should not take it. If they want to take up this challenge then they require the medical approval and gear up to unveil the enthralling expedition.

Chadar trek is considered the toughest winter trek in India, it is indeed a difficult adventure. All you need is proper preparation which includes physical and mental training along with the smart packing regime. If you make all the pieces fall in the correct places, it does not matter even if you are a first-timer.

No, Chadar Trek should never be done solo as it is one of the treacherous treks ever. It is highly recommended to have a group even if it is a small one, to accompany you throughout the trek.
